The City of Seattle is seeking a collaborative and strategic leader to lead the City’s labor relations strategy and the Labor Relations team within the Seattle Department of Human Resources (SDHR). The next Labor Relations (LR) Director will ensure strong collaboration with the City’s Labor partners and work directly with the Mayor’s Office, City Council, and other City stakeholders to shape and execute the City’s labor strategies and policy. The City of Seattle (population 700,000) is a seaport city and is the largest city in the Pacific Northwest, and was named as the fastest-growing city in the United States in July 2016. The City of Seattle has nearly 10,000 employees, spanning 26 operating departments. The City has collective bargaining agreements with 23 unions representing approximately 75% of the City of Seattle employees. The LR Director reports to the SDHR Director and is a member of the SDHR Executive Team, and citywide Human Resources Leadership Team.
The LR Director is responsible for identifying, advising and coordinating with these teams and department Directors on all city-wide issues with labor implications as well as on integrated human resources and labor strategies more broadly, including Workforce Equity and the alignment to support a more equitable work experience for City employees. The LR Director leads a staff of seven Labor Negotiators, one Labor Relations Specialist and is supported by an Executive Assistant. The Labor Relations Unit’s operating budget for FY18 is $1.8 million.
