The position will serve on Public Works Department Human Resources Employee Relations Team with the City of Austin. Responsibilities include investigating complaints of discrimination, harassment, and retaliation, and other critical employee relations issues.
This position will provide training, advice and guidance to employees, supervisors, managers, and executives across the department on complex employee relations matters, including interpretation and application of policy, procedure and Municipal Civil Service (MCS) rules. Additionally, this position will provide oversight for workers’ compensation and FMLA administration and will help resolve complex claims and cases.
This position may also provide back-up support in other areas of Human Resources, including talent acquisition, compensation, etc.
Graduation with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in a related field plus two (2) years of human resources experience in the assigned area of specialization. One (1) additional year of experience may substitute for the education up to the maximum of four (4) years.
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Human Resources
PHR, SPHR, SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP certification
Experience conducting formal investigations into allegations of discrimination, harassment, retaliation, and other policy violations and writing investigation reports
Experience advising and supporting supervisors and managers to successfully manage employee behavior and performance issues, including experience researching and drafting formal disciplinary action documents.
Experience integrating employee protections and benefits, including employer provided leave benefits, Workers’ Compensation and FMLA, and facilitating requests for accommodation under the Americans with Disabilities Act
Experience partnering with management to develop and document policies and procedures
Experience developing and delivering training to managers, supervisors and employees
Proficient with Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint software applications
Class “C” Texas driver license
