Surry County, Virginia (6,540) is a deeply historic county lying midway between Richmond and Norfolk, directly across the James River from James City County, Jamestown and Williamsburg. The Board is seeking an innovative County Administrator to provide policy advice, organizational leadership and managerial direction. The next County Administrator will be tactful, discrete, diplomatic, apolitical, and honest with the ability to lead, delegate, motivate and inspire with a willingness to hear everyone, build consensus and drive decision-making to conclusion.
The Administrator is responsible to the Board of Supervisors and citizens of Surry County for coordinating an update to the County’s strategic plan and then executing it, focusing closely on creative ways to increase tourism, economic and community development and giving sound financial advice to the County Board. It is important that the Administrator makes themselves available to citizens, responding to their inquiries or complaints, and serving as a trusted link between the citizens and the Board keeping both informed of the others concerns and needs with an emphasis on public outreach.
The successful candidate must have a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree is preferred. At least five (5) years of progressively responsible management experience in local government administration. Past experience of the individual must show high levels of performance and leadership in areas that include economic development and tourism, finance and budget, growth management, long range and strategic planning, staff development and succession management and maintaining positive lines of communication at all levels.
