The City of Statesboro is seeking their next City Manager who will engage transparently and proactively with elected officials and the community. This highly motivated leader and manager must maintain and enhance a Council-Staff partnership and a commitment to the “small City” atmosphere desired by citizens. Economic development opportunities are ready to launch and historic Georgia Southern University is a significant economic partner and driver in the community. The next City Manager will be able to work with excellent staff and an engaged Council to help this charming Southern community leverage opportunities to further enhance quality of life and meet Citizen expectations. The position is open due to retirement. The City of Statesboro, GA is a full-service municipality that operates under a Council/Manager form of government. The City Council sets the policies, enacts ordinances, votes the appropriations and develops the overall vision, which is then carried out under the City Manager’s direction. The City Council consists of six members including the Mayor. The City Manager is responsible for implementing the City’s vision, the Council’s policies and managing the City’s day-to-day operations. The City has received GFOA distinguished budget awards since 2004 and has a FY19 adopted budget of over $53.8 M.
The City Manager Position: Appointed by and working under the direction of the Mayor and City Council, the City Manager serves as the City’s Chief Executive Officer. The City Manager will oversee a staff of 294 FT and 12 PT employees across 8 divisions including General Government (Administration, City Clerk, Human Resources, Finance, Planning and Development and Engineering), Judicial (Municipal Court), Public Safety (Police and Fire), Public Works (Streets, Parks, Fleet Maintenance, Sanitation, Stormwater), and Public Utilities (Natural Gas, Water/Sewer, and Wastewater). The City Manager works with Council to enhance community input and engagement through nine Boards and commissions.
The Ideal Candidate: As the liaison between City departments and the Council, the City Manager offers candid insight and expert analysis to assist the Council in formulating and implementing short- and long-range goals for City growth management. With a broad scope of professional expertise, the successful candidate has a track record of providing leadership to support the development and management of multiple projects and partnerships and must be an innovative and visionary consensus builder with outstanding judgment, operational and management skills, and integrity.

Qualifications: The successful candidate will have a minimum of 7 years increasingly responsible professional experience in local government management. Minimum of bachelor’s degree is required while a master’s degree is strongly preferred. Must have proven track record in effective intergovernmental relations, personal community engagement, economic development successes, leading cohesive and strategic change, visionary leadership, and being adept at leading and implementing strategic planning to meet community goals. ICMA certification is desired. The successful candidate will receive a highly competitive salary with an excellent benefits package that considers the candidate’s salary history and track record of success.
