Princeton, IL (pop. 7,700). The City of Princeton is seeking a new city manager to replace the current manager who has accepted a position in the private sector after serving in the position for the past four years. Princeton, located in north central Illinois, is the county seat of Bureau County. Princeton is known for its historic neighborhoods and quaint shopping districts. It is a friendly and safe community that offers its residents an outstanding quality of life. The community also boasts a vibrant local economy with a number of mid-sized employers and a thriving service sector. Its location along Interstate 80 and the BNSF rail line (with Amtrak service stopping in Princeton 8 times daily) makes it an ideal location for businesses requiring excellent transportation linkages.
The City of Princeton provides its residents with a full complement of municipal services including police, fire/ems, street maintenance, and sanitation. It also owns and operates an electric utility with power generation and distribution, along with water and wastewater utilities. The City also owns the local community hospital: Perry Memorial Hospital. The City has 72 FTE’s and a $25 million annual budget. Princeton’s equalized assessed property valuation totals $135,730,725.
Princeton is governed by a five (5) member City Council consisting of four (4) Council Members and the Mayor. All are elected at-large to four year overlapping terms. The City operates under the Council-Manager form of government. The City Manager serves as the organization’s Chief Administrative Officer and is responsible for the oversight of all operating departments and for the hiring and supervision of all staff. The City Manager also prepares and administers the annual budget and makes recommendations on all policy matters that go before the City Council.
The City Council is seeking candidates that have a thorough working knowledge of most aspects of municipal government operations. Although not required, the Council hopes to attract candidates who hold a master’s degree in public administration or some related field and have at least five years of experience in public sector management.
Preferred candidates will have knowledge and experience in the following areas:
Financial management and budgeting
Public infrastructure planning and maintenance
Personnel management & labor relations
The new City Manager will need to have an engaging personality and must maintain an accessible and visible presence in the community. The successful candidate must be a person of integrity who is honest, ethical, trustworthy, respectful and courteous. They will need to be able to establish productive relationships with elected officials, city staff and members of the community.
The starting annual salary range for this position is $95,000 - $120,000 DOQ/E. In order to qualify for a salary at the upper end of the starting range, the candidate must have exceptional credentials. In addition to the salary, the City of Princeton provides an outstanding and comprehensive package of fringe benefits. Residency within the corporate limits of Princeton will be required within six months of the City Manager’s start date.
