The City of Huntington Woods, incorporated in 1932, is a 1.5 square mile inner-ring suburb located in Southeast Oakland County on the Woodward Avenue corridor ten miles northwest of downtown Detroit. Known as the “City of Homes” it has been ranked as one of America’s top ten suburbs comprised of 2,448 homes with a population of 6,169 people. The City is unique with a portion of the Detroit Zoo residing within the City limits as well as the City of Detroit owned Rackham Golf Course. The City aspires to be an inclusive and welcoming community that is fiscally sound and offers a variety of public services to residents. The City has a valued city manager tradition, with three managers in the last forty-three years. The City has a non-partisan, directly elected Mayor (four-year term), and four City Commissioners, elected to staggered four-year terms. The City currently has forty-four full-time employees and a general fund of $8.3 million.
The position requires a bachelor’s degree (MPA or equivalent desired), with five to ten years of progressively responsible experience in local government. The City has long been recognized for its exceptional services. The incoming City Manager is expected to embrace this commitment to providing exceptional City services and be passionate about community relations. The successful candidate has outstanding communication and marketing skills, experience in inter-governmental collaboration, be innovative with demonstrated skills in public and business relations and must have the capacity to serve as the City’s ambassador to the public, including residents, neighboring communities, higher governments, and the media. Huntington Woods seeks a proven, dedicated City Manager with experience in municipal finance and budgeting, human resources, employee relations, planning and knowledge of technology. Knowledge of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) in the workplace and or in public policy or urban planning, or a combination of both, is highly desirable. Although residency is not required, upon appointment, the candidate is expected to become actively involved in the community. ICMA credential recognition is a plus.
