The City of Dickinson, North Dakota is seeking an experienced City Administrator!
Renowned for its outstanding quality of life and small-town feel, the City of Dickinson, population just over 25,000, is seeking an experienced City Administrator. The ideal City Administrator will be a team player, mentor and coach, who delegates responsibility to department heads and encourages an environment that inspires growth and creativity. The ability to establish expectations and accountability, and take a collaborative approach is crucial. The ideal candidate will lead by example, have the ability to work effectively with people, and resolve problems in a timely manner. The City Administrator will spend time working with legislators at the state capital in Bismarck, therefore, negotiation skills, understanding house bills that affect southwest North Dakota, being adept at intergovernmental relations, working with other agencies in the region, as well as with state and local officials, is essential. The individual must be knowledgeable of grants and other opportunities for external funding.
The ideal candidate will have at least a Bachelor’s Degree in public or business administration or another area related to city management. Requires eight years progressive leadership experience in municipal administration with four years as City Administrator/Manager and expertise in local government, human resource management, finance and budget, and economic development and redevelopment. Others with strong leadership and management skills and who have reported to a board and possess the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered.
The salary range is $126,528-$177,247 depending on skills, experience, education and background. The City also offers a competitive benefits package including NDPERS retirement.

Operating under the Commission form of government, the City Commission is non-partisan and composed of five members. The Commission President and four Commissioners are elected at-large and serve staggered, four-year terms.
The city has one other elected official—the Municipal Judge. The position is part-time and has jurisdiction over traffic fines, infractions, administrative/non-criminal offenses, parking violations, and Class B Misdemeanors written on city codes.
The Commission appoints a City Administrator who works for the City Commission as a whole to insure their plans and priorities are carried out by city staff. The City Administrator oversees the day-to-day functions of the city and coordinates the city departments including police, fire, engineering, building codes, planning, finance, IT, human resources, assessing, public works, library and museum. The City operates with 230 FTEs and a 2020 general fund budget of approximately $25M and a total budget of $65M.
As a result of the community’s growth, city services and facilities needed to be expanded. The city wisely invested in new facilities which were built to last for 40 years and to accommodate growth in the... staff that will be needed as Dickinson expands. These buildings include a new 90,000 square foot public works facility, a new 45,000 square foot public safety facility and a new wastewater treatment plant.
