The Position
The City of Bothell is seeking an experienced and highly regarded Community Development Director to provide strategic and visionary leadership to the Community Development Department. The Community Development Director establishes the strategic direction of the Community Development Department. The Director plans, organizes, implements, and oversees department operations and programs to ensure the level of services keeps pace with internal and external needs. The Director promotes and develops positive working relationships internally and externally and develops proactive response plans to provide the highest level of customer service.
The Community Development Director applies and administers development regulations, guaranteeing safe infrastructure and building construction, and provides accurate technical information on community-enhancing projects and programs to the greater community. This position assists with implementing Bothell’s Visions for Downtown and Canyon Park through establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with outside agencies, businesses, and municipal developers and provides overall project coordination. Director is responsible for the departmental budget and regularly meets with staff to identify and prioritize funding requests. The Director also prepares and reviews reports and recommends plan and code amendments, annexations, landmark preservation projects, and other planning, zoning, and building issues.
The Community Development Director reports to the City Manager and has four direct reports, including the Deputy Community Development Director, Building Official, Administrative Services Manager, and Community Engagement Specialist. The Director fosters a culture of integrated and inclusive problem solving while creating a sense of belonging and connection within the team. In addition, the ideal candidate promotes a positive and collaborative working environment where employees thrive, are treated with respect and are recognized for their accomplishments.

Compensation and Benefits

Qualifications
At least seven (7) years of experience managing community development and urban planning programs. Strong leadership experience and the ability to work closely with the City Council are essential. Knowledge of current principles and practices of urban planning, community development, land use, zoning regulation, building construction, code enforcement, permitting, and environmental protection are required. Prior experience developing and managing a budget is required. Demonstrated expertise in growth management is essential, with knowledge of Washington’s Growth Management Act ideal.
A bachelor's degree in Urban Planning, Engineering, Earth Sciences, Business or Public Administration, or a closely related field is required. Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying.
