The City of Bartow offers a benefit package that includes a pension with only 4% match and 6 year vesting. There are multiple health insurance plans available, two of which the City pays 100% of the employee's premium. The City of Bartow is seeking a highly experienced law enforcement officer to join our team as Deputy Chief of Police. This is a management position that will play a vital role in the Police Department and the City as a whole.
Job Summary: Performs immediate professional and responsible administrative work providing administrative and management assistance to the Chief of Police. Work is performed under the supervision of the Chief of Police. This is work which involves walking, running, and/or standing, exerting up to one hundred fifty (150) pounds of force intermittently, routine keyboard operations, the ability to continuously wear/carry up to 30 lbs. of equipment, the exertion of up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 25 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects; work requires crouching, reaching, standing, lifting, grasping and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word, and conveying detailed or important instruction to others accurately, loudly, or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken work levels, and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; visual acuity is required for depth perception, color perception, night vision, peripheral vision, use of measuring devices, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surrounds and activities; the work is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise and hazards. The worker may be exposed to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.
Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree from an Accredited College or University with major coursework in criminal justice, criminology, public management or criminal justice administration. Master’s degree preferred. Advanced training such as the FBI National Academy, University of Louisville Southern Police Institute’s Administrative Officers Course (AOC), Northwestern's School of Police Command and Staff, Leadership in Police Organizations (LPO), and/or Police Executive Research Forum’s Senior Management Institute for Police (SMIP), or graduate-level training in leadership, law or public administration is also preferred. Minimum 10 years’ law enforcement experience, holding the minimum rank of Police Captain; or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience which provides the necessary intermediate knowledge, skills, and abilities and other competencies necessary for the position.
Licenses, Certifications, Special Requirements:
Must possess a valid state of Florida’s driver’s license.
Must maintain a valid telephone number.
Must maintain certification as a Law Enforcement Officer from the Florida Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission.
Applicants will be required to pass an extensive background investigation which includes, but is not limited to, a polygraph exam, physical agility test, drug screening examination, physical exam, psychological testing, credit checks, and be of good moral character, etc., prior to being offered employment with the Bartow Police Department.
Must be able to pass mandated psychological testing to perform duties and responsibilities of the position.
