The City of Austin is seeking a highly qualified individual to fill the Deputy Director of the Austin Convention Center position. This role reports to the Director of the Austin Convention Center. The Deputy Director of the Austin Convention Center will have several exciting challenges to address and areas of opportunity to excel. Among these is the need to have manage over $1.2 billion in contracts related to the expansion project. The successful candidate will be instrumental in administering two newly established taxing districts: the Project Financing Zone and the Austin Tourism Public Improvement District which are expected to generate millions in revenue to support the expansion and bolster the tourism industry. The next Deputy Director of the Austin Convention Center will bring experience in large-scale complex capital projects, taxing district administration, and revenue strategy.
Under general direction of the Director, the Deputy Director exercises independent judgment and is responsible for the general management, event/exhibitor operations, sales/marketing, IT services, Finance/Purchasing and Community Services of the City's public event and parking facilities.
Duties, Functions and Responsibilities:
Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
Manage of the day-to-day operations of the City's public event and parking facilities, including administrative and support functions.
Support the Director in operational management of shared usage facilities.
Assist the Director in development of department annual budget.
Assist the Director in establishing and managing fees and revenues for facility usage, including rates to be paid for lease or rental of the facilities, concessions, parking, etc.
Manage contractor and subcontractor workforce.
Mentor and coach staff.
Direct supervision of Convention Facility Managers.
Disseminate information to, and encourage discussion to, foster understanding of the information.
Evaluate performance, provide feedback and suggest improvement.
Responsible for the full range of supervisory activities including selection, training, evaluation, counseling, and recommendation for dismissal.
Bachelor's degree in Business/Administration Public Administration, or related field plus a minimum of seven (7) years of progressively responsible experience managing complex organizations, including leadership, fiscal management, and oversight of major programs or divisions, preferably within a convention center, public event facility, hospitality industry, or a related field.
One (1) additional year of experience may substitute for one (1) year of the required education with a maximum substitution of four (4) years.
