Under the direction of the Deputy City Manager, the Public Works Director oversees department programs in engineering design and surveys, public building maintenance, transit system, street and sidewalk construction and maintenance, public parking, traffic control, vehicle and equipment maintenance, and contract administration.

This position requires a bachelor’s degree in engineering, with a master’s degree in a relevant field preferred. Candidates should also have at least 10 years of Public Works experience in municipal government, and five years of supervisory experience is desired. Certifications from the American Public Works Association and expertise in a similar-sized department—or larger—are a plus, as are certifications by the American Institute of Certified Planners or as a Professional Traffic Operations Engineer. Additionally, candidates should be licensed as a Professional Engineer in the State of Missouri or have the ability to obtain their license within one year of their hire date.
The City of Columbia is offering a starting salary of $96,013 to $168,605 for this position, dependent on qualifications and experience.
